Why You Shouldn’t DIY Home Flood Clean-up

A sewer backup wreaks havoc on your home. It throws off your schedule, makes your home smell awful, and exposes you to bacteria and hazardous chemicals.

The risk of sewage backups and flooding are a huge concern for homeowners. It might seem like you can grab old rags and towels and mop up the mess yourself, but if done incorrectly, you’ll find yourself in a worse problem than before. To handle it all the right way the first time, give us a call at (801) 676-3500.

Health Risks

There are various causes of sewage backups in your home, like blocked drain pipes, tree roots, and damaged sewer lines. When a sewer backup happens in your home, there are two types of sewer water to understand–greywater and blackwater.

Greywater & Blackwater

Greywater is the waste produced by sinks, tubs, showers, and dishwashers. Blackwater consists of the human waste flushed away with the toilet water.

There are many contaminants in sewage, especially blackwater, including parasites, viruses, and bacteria. If you don’t wear personal protective equipment (PPE) or follow proper procedures, you can suffer serious health consequences. There are more than a dozen diseases you’re at risk of contracting, such as hepatitis A and encephalitis.

Mold

A home flood is the ideal breeding ground for many types of dangerous mold, since mold needs moisture, organic material, and the right temperature. Mold can grow within just 24-48 hours of the flooding incident. Although you might be able to clean up the surface mess on your own, you’ll need a professional to come in and make sure all mold has been properly removed and taken care of.

Other Dangers

In addition to water damage and mold, sewage backups also provide a risk for electrocution and explosions. It’s crucial to make sure your electricity and gas have been completely shut off before entering flooded areas or lighting matches. In the event of detecting gas, evacuate your home and contact the gas company immediately.

If you have not turned off your main power switch before flooding, you should not enter your home. Even after the power is turned off, it is dangerous to touch electrical lines, wires, equipment, and fixtures.

If it sounds like this is amounting to too big a problem, you can call us at (801) 676-3500. This is our specialty, and we know how to best take care of you, your family, and your home in the safest way possible.
